Not Afraid: New Work by Gina Lee Robbins and Janice Elkins, Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, 2021.

In Not Afraid, Janice Elkins and Gina Lee Robbins use bold imagery, fractured form, and rich layers of texture, to render the human experience in abstracted, yet vividly emotional ways.

Working independently, using different media, and speaking from distinct vantage points, the duo created a cohesive symphony of fearless canvases, sculptures and installations. Each artist works intuitively, mining deep in her psyche to explore provocative form and narrative that generates a visceral, sometimes uncomfortable, response. The work recalls fragments from nature, urban living and personal memory that have left indelible marks. Forms take unexpected turns, finishes are complicated and irregular, referencing the unpredictable nature of life, and our messy, uncontrolled responses, be they rage, grief, joy, delight, or wonder.
